Blokus - Version 1.2
This game has been derived from the original board game.
The object of this game is simple:
- Be the last man standing.
Now, there is more to it than that. It really comes down to who has the most points. Of
course, the only way to get points is to be able to place pieces down.
Each colour has 21 pieces. Each piece is composed of blocks. The first piece has only
one block, the second has two, and the third has three. The fourth also has only three,
but looks a little different. Each piece has a maximum of five blocks and no two pieces
look identical.
Once you place a piece down, it is gone. There are no duplicate pieces.
The board is a grid that is 20 tiles by 20 tiles. Continue placing pieces down until
everyone has run out of moves. Okay, so where do we begin?
Red goes first in the top-left corner. This is followed by Yellow in the top-right, Green
in the bottom-right, and finally Purple in the bottom-left. The colour's very first move
MUST fill in the corner tile of the board.
Remember that you can rotate and flip pieces in order to get the desired shape. More about
the user controls later on.
Now there is only one rule governing where the next piece of that same colour is placed.
The next piece of that same colour MUST be placed diagonally adjacent to any other piece
currently on the board of the same colour. Also, pieces cannot overlap nor be placed ontop
of eachother.
Scoring
- Every piece placed down is worth as many points as blocks. If the piece is made of
five blocks, that colour will get five points.
- If you place down all pieces of one colour, that colour gets an additional 10 points.
- If the last piece placed down of that one colour was made of only one block, you get
an additional 5 points.
Currently, the game must be played hotseat.
Four Player Game - Each player chooses their own colour. The colour with the most
points wins the game.
Three Player Game - Choose a colour to be the odd one out (rogue). Whenever that colour has a turn, the next player gets to control it. In other words, every round, one player will have two turns. One turn to control his colour, and the other to control the rogue colour. Score of the rogue colour is not considered. Each player should get a chance to control the rogue colour before another player gets to use it a second (or third or fourth) time.
Two Player Game - Each player chooses opposing corners. Therefore, one player is
Red/Green and the other is Yellow/Purple. When the game is complete, add up the scores for the two different colours by player. The highest score wins!
One Player Game - Although the board game provides an options, my applet does not.
This may be corrected in a future version.
User Controls
- The board is displayed as a grey grid in the top left corner.
- Beneath the board is the current score for all four of the colours.
- To the right is the Side Bar.
- Whichever colour is displayed in the Side Bar is the current colour that now has a turn.
- Four pieces out of the possible remaining total are displayed.
- In order to scroll through the pieces, click on the up and down arrows.
- To choose a piece to manipulate, click directly on it.
- While a piece is selected, a black outline followed by four buttons will be displayed.
- Use these four buttons to manipulate the piece.
- When ready to place a piece on the board, simply click and hold. Drag the piece onto
the board and let go where desired.
Surrendering to your Opponent
Eventually, you will run out of moves. The game will not help you find new moves, it is
up to each player to decide when his or her colour should surrender. When you are finished
making all possible moves with the colour, simply click on the Surrender button. Once all
colours are finished or have surrendered, the game will end.
Gameplay Options
Before starting the game, click on the Options button. Here, you can write down your name
for the following game in the appropriate player slot. Choose the number of players and
then decide on the following two options:
- Instead of allowing infinite time for a player to decide what piece to put down next, implement
a time limit. The time limit applies for the entire game. If a player uses up all of his time, then
he automatically surrenders and is out of the game.
- Instead of having 21 set pieces; have an infinite amount. You can place down the same
piece numerous times. This will have severe effects on gameplay, but remember that all players
get the advantage that comes with an infinite number of pieces.
