Division of Shifts

Starfleet ships rely on Earth calendars, with expected 24-hour notations (in standard military time according to GMT.) Each shift is 4 hours in length, although is often personally extended for lunch and other mid-work breaks before engaging another shift. It's unlikely any crewmen would work three consecutive shifts.

It is the responsibility of each Chief Petty Officer to maintain and assess duty shifts in the timetable appropriately.

Expected Crew Performance

Workshift (3 shifts a day)

Workshifts begin at 0800 and run until 2000 each day. All Major duties are often performed during this period. Staff levels are expected as the following:

This is a total of 16 members, coming to 48 shifts across all departments.

Nightshift (3 shifts a night)

Shifts resume from 2000 until 0800 the next day. At this point, some areas of the ship are unavailable or restricted in performance (like the Galley). Any Offpeak duties (like diagnostics) are nominally performed at this time.

This is a total of 11 members, coming to 33 shifts across all departments. One would expect 81 shifts a day during normal operations.

Given a crew of 36, one would expect 2 shifts a day with an off-shift performed by each crewman every four days.
